Inside the project
Kikonda restores a central-Ugandan forest reserve in the Kafu river catchment, replanting degraded reserve land under the Gold Standard afforestation and reforestation methodology (GS 2990).
The reserve covers 12,182 hectares in total, of which roughly 7,321 are eligible project area. More than 10,000 hectares have been reforested with over eight million trees.
The project is operated by global-woods AG and reports more than one million tonnes of CO2 sequestered to date.
Gold Standard's registry lists Nile Fibreboard Ltd. as project developer, the project as Gold Standard certified, with 18,058 estimated annual credits and a crediting period from 2002 to 2050.
Objectives
- Reforest degraded land within the Kikonda Forest Reserve.
- Protect the Kafu river catchment through restored forest cover.
- Sequester verified carbon under the Gold Standard A/R methodology.
- Establish durably managed reserve forest at scale.
Approach
- Replanting of degraded reserve land within a defined 7,321-hectare eligible area.
- Gold Standard afforestation and reforestation crediting (GS 2990).
- Catchment protection along the Kafu river through restored forest cover.
- Long-term reserve management by global-woods AG.
