Hongera Reforestation
On the montane catchments of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, Hongera aims to replant degraded water-catchment forest at scale, with roughly 10.7 million trees planned across 27,800 hectares and some 10,000 participating farmers.

Inside the project
Hongera restores logging and clearance-degraded montane water-catchment forest on Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, critical catchments that feed much of central Kenya.
Operated by DGB Group with Climate Investment Partners and the Akili Group, it is registered under Verra's VCS as Project ID 3321. The project achieved validation, with crediting from 1 January 2023.
It targets 27,800 hectares and about 10.7 million trees with roughly 10,000 participating farmers, aiming for around 340,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. As of recent updates some 600 hectares had been planted, so most of the target remains ahead.
Objectives
- Restore degraded montane water-catchment forest on Mount Kenya and the Aberdares.
- Plant around 10.7 million indigenous trees across 27,800 hectares.
- Involve roughly 10,000 farmers in agroforestry-based restoration.
- Reach about 340,000 tonnes of CO2 sequestration per year at maturity.
Approach
- Agroforestry with indigenous trees to restore degraded catchment areas.
- Verra VCS crediting under Project ID 3321, with crediting from January 2023.
- Farmer participation across the Mount Kenya and Aberdares landscapes.
- A phased planting programme building toward the full 27,800-hectare target.
