Inside the project
The Panna afforestation project, developed by Climate Impact Partners with Terra Natural Capital, plants native trees across farmer and community lands in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, India.
The programme targets up to 11.6 million native trees over 20,000 hectares spanning more than 100 communities, with over 1.2 million trees already planted at the time of announcement.
Microsoft signed a 30-year agreement for 1.5 million tonnes of removal credits from the project, described as the largest APAC nature-based removal offtake to date. The underlying registry standard is not named in the cited sources.
Objectives
- Plant up to 11.6 million native trees across 20,000 hectares of farmer and community lands.
- Deliver 1.5 million tonnes of durable removal credits under a 30-year Microsoft agreement.
- Engage more than 100 communities in tree establishment and stewardship.
Approach
- Plant native trees on farmer and community lands across more than 100 communities.
- Structure delivery around a 30-year removal offtake to fund long-duration establishment and monitoring.
- Build from an early base of over 1.2 million trees planted at announcement.
