Inside the project
Alto Huayabamba is an avoided-deforestation and conservation project in the Andean-Amazon region of San Martin, Peru.
It is organised around the Alto Huayabamba Conservation Concession; Verra's registry names the Peruvian association Amazónicos por la Amazonía (AMPA) as proponent.
The project is registered under Verra's VCS programme with CCB certification.
As viewed in September 2026, Verra's registry lists VCS 1882 as registered on 31 July 2019, covering 53,410 hectares of forest within a 143,928-hectare concession, with all 316,458 issued units retired.
Objectives
- Protect montane Andean-Amazon forest within the conservation concession.
- Reduce deforestation pressure at the agricultural frontier.
- Support surrounding communities through the concession and carbon finance.
Approach
- A legally granted conservation concession provides the tenure basis for protection.
- REDD+ crediting is verified under VCS against a modelled deforestation baseline.
- As with other REDD+ concessions, the avoided-deforestation figure is a methodology-dependent estimate rather than a measured counterfactual.
