Tambopata-Bahuaja REDD+ Project
In the buffer zone between Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, the Peruvian NGO AIDER, working with the national park service SERNANP and more than 300 farmers organised in the Tambopata Candamo Cooperative, has planted one million fine aromatic cacao trees.
Inside the project
The cacao planting is the centrepiece of a VCS+CCB Gold-level REDD+ project funded in part by Althelia Ecosphere.
The developer's stated aim combines biodiversity conservation across a 591,119-hectare protection area with an economic alternative to the mining and agricultural land-use change driving deforestation in the buffer zone.
Verra's registry names AIDER as proponent of VCS 1067 under an administration contract with the Peruvian State for Tambopata National Reserve and the Madre de Dios sector of Bahuaja-Sonene National Park; as viewed in September 2026 it shows 4,874,608 units issued and 4,595,293 retired, with a verification approval requested.
Objectives
- Plant cacao agroforestry as an alternative to deforestation drivers
- Conserve biodiversity across the 591,119 ha buffer-zone protection area
Approach
- REDD+ under Verra VCS+CCB Gold Level, combined with buffer-zone cacao agroforestry to offer an alternative livelihood to deforestation drivers.
