Inside the project
XiCO2e is a reforestation project operated by the Ala-boOl Trust with Forliance, restoring 1,219 hectares of degraded and abandoned agricultural land in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Tamaulipas.
The project is registered under Verra VCS (VCS3342), is FSC certified, and uses CDM methodology AR-ACM0003, with a crediting period running from 2017 to 2047.
As viewed in September 2026, Verra's registry lists VCS 3342 as registered on 14 February 2025, with 84,598 units issued and 9,273 retired.
Planting uses Gmelina arborea, a fast-growing exotic (non-native) timber species. This is a plantation-style approach rather than native-forest restoration, a distinction relevant to biodiversity and permanence assessment.
Objectives
- Reforest 1,219 hectares of degraded and abandoned agricultural land.
- Support more than 70 landowners and generate around 300 jobs over the project life.
- Generate verified carbon credits under Verra VCS across the 2017 to 2047 crediting period.
Approach
- Establish plantations of Gmelina arborea, a fast-growing exotic timber species, on abandoned agricultural land.
- Maintain FSC certification and Verra VCS registration (VCS3342) under CDM methodology AR-ACM0003.
- Involve more than 70 landowners and support local employment across a 2017 to 2047 crediting period.
