Restore Local: Lake Kivu and Rusizi River Basin (Burundi Component)
Under TerraFund for AFR100's 'Restore Local' programme for the Lake Kivu and Rusizi River Basin, the Burundi-based organisation Perfect Village Communities is restoring roughly 300 hectares and planting 36,000 trees in the degradation hotspots of Bujumbura, Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces.
Inside the project
The programme describes these steep, densely populated, high-rainfall slopes as suffering declining vegetation health due to poor farming practices and expanding settlements.
Basin-wide, funded by the Bezos Earth Fund and The Audacious Project, the programme reports more than 5 million trees planted and 13,000 hectares under restoration as of July 2025, across Rwanda, Burundi and DRC combined.
Objectives
- Restore degraded slopes in Burundi's degradation hotspot provinces
- Plant trees to address declining vegetation health from farming pressure and settlement expansion
Approach
- Perfect Village Communities carries out on-ground tree planting and restoration in the identified degradation hotspots, as part of the basin-wide TerraFund for AFR100 programme.
