Niger Delta Mangrove Restoration
This project restores mangrove across Akwa Ibom and Rivers States in Nigeria's Niger Delta. Developed by First Climate, it is the first nature-based project registered with Verra in Nigeria and is under verification for VCS and CCB. Since 2021 it has planted around 1,000,000 mangroves a year, restoring hundreds of hectares, with independent verification confirming community and climate impact.

Inside the project
First Climate develops the project across two Niger Delta states, targeting degraded mangrove.
It is the first nature-based project registered with Verra in Nigeria, with VCS and CCB verification in progress.
Planting has run at roughly 1,000,000 mangroves per year since 2021, and an independent verification has confirmed community and climate impact.
Objectives
- Restore degraded mangrove across Akwa Ibom and Rivers States
- Complete VCS and CCB verification under Verra
- Sustain planting of around 1,000,000 mangroves a year
- Confirm community and climate impact through independent verification
Approach
- The project restores mangrove through annual large-scale planting, pursuing Verra VCS and CCB certification (currently under verification). An independent verification has confirmed its community and climate impact.
- It is the first nature-based project registered with Verra in Nigeria.
