Inside the project
The Nepal Terai Arc REDD+ programme is a jurisdictional, results-based initiative run by the Government of Nepal with community forest user groups, supported by the World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
It spans the Terai Arc Landscape across 13 districts and rewards emission reductions rather than issuing project-level credits, drawing on Nepal's established community-forestry system.
The programme reports about 1.88 million tCO2 of reductions and received a first payment of 9.4 million USD in November 2025.
Objectives
- Reduce forest loss and degradation across the Terai Arc jurisdiction.
- Channel results-based payments to forest-dependent and Indigenous communities.
- Support community-led restoration, enterprises and benefit-sharing.
Approach
- Payments are jurisdictional and results-based, tied to verified reductions across the whole landscape rather than a single project boundary.
- Nepal's community forest user groups deliver on-the-ground restoration and management.
- Benefit-sharing routes payments to forest-dependent and Indigenous communities under the FCPF framework.
