Gabon results-based forest payments (CAFI)

In June 2021 Norway, through CAFI, paid Gabon $17 million for reducing forest emissions in 2016 and 2017 against its 2006 to 2015 average, at $5 a tonne after independent verification. Norway's climate minister called it the first time an African country had been rewarded for reducing forest emissions at national level.

Overview

Inside the project

Gabon's forests cover 88 percent of its territory, and Norway's initiative put deforestation below 0.08 percent a year since 1990.

Gabon's forest minister said the payment would fund community forestry, research, forest management, protected areas and government capacity.
