National Biodigester Programme (NBP), Cambodia
Run by SNV Cambodia together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the National Biodigester Programme built locally constructed biogas plants that turn animal manure and human waste into methane gas burned in household stoves, rice cookers and lamps. Its own reporting puts the programme at nearly 29,000 biodigesters built by December 2021 through 118 local micro-enterprises.

Inside the project
Locally constructed biogas plants convert animal manure and human excrement into combustible methane gas, which can be used in simple gas stoves, rice cookers and lamps.
The programme's own reporting states nearly 29,000 biodigesters constructed from March 2006 to December 2021 through 118 micro-enterprises in 15 provinces, with over 70% of households financed via a biogas loan since 2010.
Objectives
- Build household biogas plants across 15 provinces
- Develop a market of local micro-enterprises for biodigester construction
Approach
- SNV Cambodia, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, supports a network of local micro-enterprises that construct household biodigesters.
