Yagasu Mangrove Restoration
The Yagasu project restores mangrove along the degraded coast of Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia. Run by the Livelihoods Carbon Fund with local partner Yagasu, it certified roughly 8,750 ha under Verra VCS 1493 in 2015. More than 30 million mangroves have been planted across around 12,300 ha of degraded coastline, making it one of the earliest and largest blue carbon restoration projects.

Certified in 2015 under Verra VCS 1493, the project is cited for exceptional community benefits alongside its carbon outcomes.
Planting has covered roughly 12,300 ha of degraded coast, with more than 30 million trees established.
Verra's registry shows VCS 1493 (proponent Livelihoods Fund) with 397,071 credits issued, 294,391 of them retired, and a verification awaiting approval as of September 2026.
Objectives
- Restore mangrove across around 12,300 ha of degraded Sumatran coast
- Sustain community benefits recognised in the VCS certification
- Maintain certified area of roughly 8,750 ha under Verra VCS 1493
- Establish and steward more than 30 million planted mangroves
Approach
- The project uses community-based mangrove restoration led by Yagasu, certified under Verra VCS 1493 with cited community co-benefits. Certification was achieved in 2015 following verification of the roughly 8,750 ha certified area.
