Winch Energy Mini-Grids, Uganda
Winch Energy builds mini-grids on its own Remote Power Unit technology. On 29 January 2021 it closed $16 million of limited-recourse financing for mini-grid sites in Uganda's Lamwo district and in Sierra Leone, which it says will supply clean energy to over 60,000 people across the two countries.

Inside the project
Winch Energy's Remote Power Units range from 10 kW to 110 kW, with 40 kWh to 384 kWh of storage.
The portfolio also adds 6,000 portable batteries to extend coverage beyond the grids.
Winch’s undated Lamwo page describes collaboration with Uganda’s government and EU/GIZ support. The 2021 portfolio financing announcement remains historical evidence; neither that announcement nor this undated page establishes present uptime or completed delivery against all original targets.
Objectives
- Supply clean electricity to over 60,000 people across the Uganda and Sierra Leone sites
Approach
- Mini-grids are built on Winch Energy's Remote Power Unit technology and financed as a limited-recourse portfolio.
