Winch Energy Mini-Grids, Sierra Leone

Winch Energy builds mini-grids on its own Remote Power Unit technology. On 29 January 2021 it closed $16 million of limited-recourse financing for mini-grid sites in the Tonkolili, Koinadugu and Bombali districts of Sierra Leone and in Uganda, which it says will supply clean energy to over 60,000 people across the two countries.

Inside the project

Winch Energy's Remote Power Units range from 10 kW to 110 kW, with 40 kWh to 384 kWh of storage, and the portfolio adds 6,000 portable batteries to extend coverage beyond the grids.

Africa Energy reported in November 2022 that three solar PV and storage mini-grids were commissioned in the villages of Alikalia, Kondebaya and Sambia-Bendugu.
