Overview

Inside the project

Tond Tenga restores degraded land across four regions of Burkina Faso, spanning the Mossi plateau and the Sahelian drylands, through native tree planting and agroforestry led by the communities that manage the land.

Registered as VCS 5085 in 2025, it is the first project to use an ICVCM CCP-approved VCS methodology (VM0047 for afforestation, reforestation and revegetation) and the first ICVCM CCP-approved carbon project in West Africa.

The project is delivered by Tree Aid, a UK NGO, and channels the large majority of carbon revenue back to land-managing communities over a 40-year crediting period.

As viewed in September 2026, Verra's registry lists VCS 5085 as registered on 4 April 2025, with Tree Aid as proponent and no units issued yet.

Objectives

  • Restore more than 12,000 hectares of degraded land across up to 185 villages.
  • Establish more than 6 million trees through native planting and agroforestry.
  • Sequester an estimated 3.1 million tonnes of CO2e over the 40-year crediting period.
  • Deliver roughly 30 million USD in benefits to land-managing communities.

Approach

  • Native tree planting and agroforestry designed and managed by local communities on degraded land.
  • Application of the ICVCM CCP-approved VM0047 methodology for afforestation, reforestation and revegetation.
  • A 40-year crediting period with benefit flows directed to land-managing communities.
