Promoting Solar Mini-Grids for Clean and Reliable Energy in Sudan
Funded by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme and implemented by Sudan's Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, this programme builds solar photovoltaic mini-grids and hybrid systems in selected off-grid and underserved rural areas of Sudan.
Inside the project
Running 2022-2026 on a budget just under $2.94m, the programme's own framing is about market-building as much as generation, targeting policy and regulatory frameworks for mini-grid operators.
Its direct build target is 2 MW of solar PV and 6.9 MWh of battery storage, retrofitting at least two existing diesel mini-grids, with roughly 144,000 people stated as its direct beneficiary count.
Objectives
- Build solar PV mini-grids and retrofit existing diesel mini-grids
- Develop policy and regulatory frameworks for mini-grid operators
- Reach roughly 144,000 direct beneficiaries
Approach
- Solar mini-grids are built and existing diesel mini-grids retrofitted, alongside development of the regulatory framework for mini-grid operators.
