PROSOL solar water heaters, Tunisia

PROSOL removes the two main barriers to solar water heaters, the upfront cost and the long payback, with a state subsidy and a five-year loan repaid on the STEG electricity bill. ANME reported more than 400,000 households equipped between 2005 and the end of 2025, with over one million square metres of collectors.

Overview

Inside the project

About 20 percent of Tunisian households now meet their hot-water needs with solar energy, and around 12,000 heaters are installed each year, according to ANME's programme director.

ANME credits the programme with 750 direct and more than 5,000 indirect jobs, and runs quality control through eligibility specifications for suppliers and installers.

Objectives

  • Spread household solar water heating across Tunisia
  • Remove upfront-cost barriers through subsidy and on-bill credit

Approach

  • Households buy an approved heater from an eligible supplier, receive a subsidy, and repay the balance over five years through the STEG electricity bill.
  • Suppliers and installers must meet ANME specifications, and complaints are tracked after installation.
