Oman Blue Carbon
On 16 October 2023 Oman's Environment Authority signed a contract with MSA Green Projects to implement Oman Blue Carbon, a four-year project to plant 100 million mangrove trees. Oman News Agency reported it as the first project in the country to use mangroves for carbon credits, stemming from the national strategy for net zero by 2050.
Inside the project
According to the Authority's chairman, the project involves land reclamation and the development of artificial lakes suitable for growing more than 100 million mangrove trees on 20,000 hectares in Al Wusta Governorate.
The Authority expects blue carbon credit certificates worth about $160 million in its favour, alongside eco-tourism sites, and put the project's economic and financial revenue at about $150 million.
Oman Observer reported the start of the project in November 2023. The hub has not found published planting or survival figures since.
Objectives
- Grow more than 100 million mangrove trees on 20,000 hectares in Al Wusta Governorate
- Cut carbon dioxide emissions by 14 million tonnes
- Realise blue carbon credit certificates for the Environment Authority
Approach
- Land reclamation and artificial lakes create growing conditions for mangroves on land that is not currently tidal forest.
- Credits from the carbon stored are to be issued as blue carbon certificates in favour of the Environment Authority.
