Ntakata Mountains REDD+
Eight villages in western Tanzania hold and protect more than 212,000 hectares of miombo woodland, generating REDD+ revenue while safeguarding a wild chimpanzee landscape.

Inside the project
Ntakata Mountains is a community REDD+ project developed by Carbon Tanzania across village land in Tanganyika District.
The project covers more than 212,000 hectares of community-governed miombo woodland and montane forest, home to a population of about 57,000 people across eight villages.
It is certified under Verra's VCS programme and the CCB Standard at Triple Gold level, and protects habitat used by chimpanzees.
Verra's registry lists VCS 1897 over 204,807 hectares, with 3,871,700 units issued and 3,603,414 retired, and a verification approval requested (as viewed September 2026).
Objectives
- Slow conversion of miombo woodland to farmland by supporting village land-use planning.
- Deliver carbon finance to the eight participating villages.
- Maintain forest connectivity for chimpanzees and other wildlife.
Approach
- Villages formalise land-use plans and bylaws that set aside forest reserves.
- Village game scouts patrol and log clearance and wildlife signs.
- Emission reductions are verified under VCS against a modelled baseline, so the avoided-deforestation claim depends on that baseline rather than a directly observed alternative outcome.
