Overview

Inside the project

The Niger Acacia Senegal Plantation Project establishes gum arabic (Acacia senegal) plantations on roughly 8,472 hectares of deforested and degraded drylands in the Aguie and Maradi area that cannot regenerate naturally.

It is run by Achats Service International (ASI) as a public-private partnership with Niger's Ministry of Environment and local rural communities.

Carbon credits supplement gum arabic income for participating communities, and the project is registered under Verra VCS and validated to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standards.

On Verra's registry, VCS 2382 was registered on 25 October 2021 across Diffa, Dosso, Maradi, Niger, Tillaberi and Zinder, with no units issued yet; a companion entry, VCS 2965, converted CDM credits from the same plantations, and all 38,769 of its units are retired (as viewed September 2026).

Objectives

  • Establish Acacia senegal plantations across roughly 8,472 hectares of degraded drylands.
  • Restore land that cannot regenerate naturally through active planting.
  • Generate an estimated 24,957 tonnes of CO2 reductions per year.
  • Supplement community income through gum arabic production alongside carbon credits.

Approach

  • Active establishment of Acacia senegal plantations where natural regeneration is not possible.
  • A public-private partnership structure linking a private developer, government and rural communities.
  • Combining carbon finance with gum arabic value chains to diversify community income.
