Mombak

Mombak is a Brazilian carbon-removal company restoring degraded Amazon pastureland with native tree species in Pará state, aiming to build some of the world's largest reforestation-based carbon removal projects. Since 2021 it has raised roughly $218 million from investors including Bain Capital, CPP Investments and the Rockefeller Foundation, and signed landmark offtake deals with Microsoft and Google. Its model couples ecological restoration with high-integrity, technology-driven carbon measurement.

Overview

Inside the project

Founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs from Brazil's Nubank and 99, Mombak set out to build the largest carbon-removal projects in the world by reforesting the Amazon. Rather than protecting existing forest, it buys or partners on degraded cattle pasture in Pará state and replants it with dozens of native Brazilian tree species, regrowing forest that draws down atmospheric CO2 as it matures.

The company operates four restoration areas in Pará at different stages of implementation, together covering roughly 20,000 hectares, with its flagship Turmalina project spanning about 2,300 hectares in the Mãe do Rio municipality. Mombak reports having planted around 5 million native trees across some 45,000 acres under management, an area roughly three times the size of Manhattan.

Mombak finances restoration through long-term carbon-removal offtake agreements and a deep investor base. It has raised approximately $218 million (about 1.25 billion reais) and signed more than $150 million in carbon-removal offtake contracts, positioning itself at the centre of Brazil's fast-growing Amazon reforestation economy ahead of COP30 in Belém.

Objectives

  • Restore large tracts of degraded Amazon pastureland in Pará using native Brazilian tree species rather than monoculture, regrowing biodiverse forest.
  • Generate high-integrity, durable carbon-removal credits verified to the Verra/VCS standard to supply corporate net-zero buyers.
  • Recover biodiversity and soil quality while reintroducing endangered native species into restored landscapes.
  • Create durable economic opportunities and jobs for local Amazon communities through the restoration value chain.

Approach

  • Mombak runs technology-driven MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) across the project lifecycle, from land selection and species choice to quantifying carbon and biodiversity gains. Its toolkit combines satellite imagery analysis, drone surveys used to establish carbon baselines and track canopy growth, machine learning and cloud infrastructure, plus bioacoustic sensors to monitor returning wildlife as a biodiversity signal.
  • Carbon accounting is done with farm-by-farm biomass estimates in the Amazon under Verra's ARR methodology, with the company acknowledging real uncertainty in early-stage modeling. Credits are tied to measured, additional regrowth on degraded land rather than avoided deforestation, and projects remain under Verra validation, meaning issuance follows verified growth over the multi-decade crediting period.
