Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Solution (MERS)
The American University in Cairo's Center for Applied Research on the Environment and Sustainability runs a mangrove restoration and community-livelihoods programme in Hamata and Safaga on Egypt's Red Sea coast, funded through the HSBC-WRI-WWF Climate Solutions Partnership.
Inside the project
As of April 2026 it reports roughly 15 hectares restored and 50,000 seedlings planted, including 10,000 specifically to offset the university's own COP27 delegation travel.
The centre describes the project as integrating local participation across the entire restoration cycle, from seed propagation and planting to developing mangrove-based economic ventures, and built Egypt's first mangrove-focused GIS monitoring platform.
Objectives
- Restore mangrove ecosystems at Hamata and Safaga
- Develop mangrove-based economic ventures with local communities
Approach
- Local participation runs across the entire restoration cycle, from seed propagation and planting to developing mangrove-based economic ventures.
