Malalison Island Solar PV Hybrid Pilot Project
On a small island in Culasi, Antique Province, a joint venture between the local electric cooperative ANTECO and private developer One Renewable Energy Enterprise, Inc. paired a diesel generator with a 50 kW solar PV array and 273 kWh of lithium-ion storage. The system moved roughly 160 households from four hours of daily power to continuous supply.

Inside the project
The existing diesel power plant is augmented by the solar PV system: power generated by day is stored in the lithium-ion batteries for use overnight.
The Asian Development Bank contributed two USD 100,000 grants against a total project cost of USD 500,548, and the system was inaugurated in April 2019.
Objectives
- Move Malalison Island from part-time to 24-hour electricity supply
- Reduce diesel generator reliance by pairing it with solar PV and battery storage
Approach
- A 50 kW solar PV array and 273 kWh of lithium-ion batteries were added to the island's existing 54 kW diesel back-up plant, storing daytime solar generation for use when the sun is down.
