Lakhodair Landfill carbon market pilot project

An announced Article 6 government-to-government pilot at Lahore's Lakhodair landfill, run by the Lahore Waste Management Company with technical support from SPAR6C, the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, the Global Green Growth Institute and GFA Consulting Group, proposes a methane-collection system supplying gas to Lahore's existing natural-gas network.

Overview

Inside the project

The site handles over 5,500 tonnes of waste daily and 12 million tonnes accumulated since opening in 2016.

As an announced pilot rather than a credit-issuing project, it has not yet reached implementation; part of its emission reductions are intended to count toward Pakistan's Nationally Determined Contributions.

Objectives

  • Collect methane from the Lakhodair landfill
  • Supply captured gas into Lahore's natural-gas network

Approach

  • A methane collection system is proposed to supply gas to the city of Lahore through existing natural-gas infrastructure, displacing natural-gas use.
