Inside the project
The Kuzuko Spekboom Restoration project restores degraded Albany Thicket in the Kuzuko and Addo area of South Africa's Eastern Cape, inside a protected reserve.
It is operated by AfriCarbon with Reforest'Action as funding partner. The project is registered under Verra VCS and is pursuing the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard.
The work replants Portulacaria afra (spekboom) across 5,185 hectares in 1,730 plots, targeting around 25.9 million seedlings, and is audited every four years across a 30 year crediting period.
Verra's registry lists the project (VCS 1343, proponent Spekboom Trading) with a crediting period from 2014 to 2067, an estimate of about 2.4 million tCO2e over 54 years, and, as of September 2026, the status Late to Verify with no credits issued.
Objectives
- Restore 5,185 hectares of degraded Albany spekboom thicket in a protected reserve.
- Plant approximately 25.9 million spekboom seedlings across 1,730 plots.
- Sequester around 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 30 years.
- Support roughly 300 jobs with audits every four years across the crediting period.
Approach
- Replant Portulacaria afra (spekboom) across 1,730 plots to restore degraded Albany Thicket.
- Work inside a protected reserve to combine carbon sequestration with biodiversity recovery.
- Register under Verra VCS while pursuing the Climate, Community and Biodiversity standard.
- Audit restoration every four years across a 30 year crediting period.
