Inside the project
Kukumuty is a community-led project in Chibabava District, Sofala Province, restoring inland terrestrial miombo woodland. It is distinct from the Zambezi delta mangroves elsewhere in this directory.
The Mangunde and Nhaumue communities lead the work, with C Level (UK) as developer. It was registered in May 2024 as the first project certified under Plan Vivo's PV Climate (Carbon Standard v5).
Over 369 hectares the project combines native miombo enrichment with fruit, nut and vegetable agroforestry, swales and fire management, and returns 60% of credit income to the communities.
Objectives
- Restore and enrich miombo woodland across 369 hectares with native species.
- Establish fruit, nut and vegetable agroforestry plots alongside swales and fire management.
- Sequester around 74,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over the project lifetime.
- Return 60% of carbon credit income to participating communities.
Approach
- Enrich native miombo woodland and plant fruit, nut and vegetable agroforestry plots.
- Use swales and fire management to protect regenerating woodland and improve water retention.
- Route 60% of credit income to the Mangunde and Nhaumue communities, with women a majority of participants.
- Certify under Plan Vivo as the first project under the PV Climate (Carbon Standard v5).
