Mangrove Restoration Project, Konkouré Delta

Guinée Ecologie, BirdLife International's Guinean partner, runs a mangrove restoration project in the Konkouré delta near Conakry, begun in January 2023, targeting 500 hectares split across direct reforestation, assisted natural regeneration, rice-paddy restoration and pressure-reduction livelihood work.

Overview

Inside the project

It follows an earlier 2019–2022 phase in the Tristao Islands, which the same organisation says restored more than 1,400 hectares.

Guinée Ecologie describes mangroves as protecting coastlines from extreme storms, erosion and wave action, while also acting as a carbon sink.

Objectives

  • Restore 500 hectares of mangrove across direct reforestation, assisted regeneration and rice-paddy restoration
  • Reduce pressure on mangroves through alternative livelihood activities

Approach

  • Direct reforestation and assisted natural regeneration are combined with rice-paddy restoration and pressure-reduction livelihood activities such as solar salt production, improved cookstoves and oyster farming.
