Overview

Inside the project

The Gorongosa Coffee and Agroforestry work reforests the slopes of Mount Gorongosa in Sofala Province, restoring terrestrial miombo woodland and Afromontane rainforest inside the national park buffer zone.

It is run by the Gorongosa Restoration Project, a partnership between the Government of Mozambique and the Greg Carr Foundation. Since 2014 the Gorongosa Coffee Project has grown Coffea arabica in the shade of native trees, intercropped with pineapple, beans and bananas.

Carbon finance is in progress, and in January 2026 the work was announced under the Miombo Restoration Alliance, an Article 6 initiative, aiming to restore or expand up to 25,000 hectares of degraded woodland and rainforest.

Objectives

  • Reforest deforested slopes of Mount Gorongosa with shade-grown coffee and native trees.
  • Restore or expand up to 25,000 hectares of degraded miombo woodland and Afromontane rainforest.
  • Provide farmer incomes through coffee intercropped with pineapple, beans and bananas.
  • Advance carbon finance, including under the Article 6 Miombo Restoration Alliance.

Approach

  • Grow shade-grown Coffea arabica intercropped with native trees to rebuild forest cover.
  • Intercrop with pineapple, beans and bananas so restoration supports farmer incomes.
  • Restore both miombo woodland and Afromontane rainforest across the park buffer zone.
  • Pursue carbon finance, including under the Article 6 Miombo Restoration Alliance announced in Jan 2026.
