Durban Landfill Gas-to-Electricity Project
Run by Durban Solid Waste at the Mariannhill landfill, this was, in the World Bank's own words, the first of its kind to be registered in Africa under the Clean Development Mechanism, begun in 2004 when no landfills in South Africa collected and used the methane they emitted.

Overview
Inside the project
Captured gas generates roughly 3 MW fed to the municipal grid, and the project's methodology went on to be used worldwide.
Beyond emissions, the project turned Mariannhill into a National Conservancy Site in 2004, supporting migratory-species corridors, and educated nearly 2,000 people in conservation and waste management.
