Cuamba solar-plus-storage plant

Mozambique's first solar plant with grid-scale battery storage, a 19 MWp/7 MWh facility at Cuamba in Niassa province, was built by Globeleq with Source Energia and sold under a 25-year power-purchase agreement to state utility EDM.

Overview

Inside the project

Commercial operations began in September 2023. Globeleq's own release states the plant serves around 22,000 Mozambican families and will displace over 172,000 tonnes of CO2 over its life.

Financing was a mix of Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund debt and PIDG/British International Investment grant support.

Objectives

  • Build Mozambique's first solar-plus-storage plant
  • Supply power to EDM under a 25-year PPA
  • Serve around 22,000 Mozambican families

Approach

  • Solar generation is paired with grid-scale battery storage and sold to the state utility under a 25-year power-purchase agreement.
