Benban solar and battery project (HAU Energy and Infinity Power)

On 14 April 2026 the EBRD announced a US$65 million construction bridging loan to HAU Energy for a new 200 MW solar photovoltaic plant and a 120 MWh battery energy storage system at Benban, near Aswan, co-developed with Infinity Power. Once operating, the facility is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 280,000 tonnes a year.

Overview

Inside the project

HAU Energy was set up in 2024 to invest in renewable energy in Egypt and is owned by Meridiam, Hassan Allam Utilities and the EBRD.

The loan comes with a technical cooperation package for two accredited green-skills training programmes for young jobseekers and for gender equality in HAU's workforce practices.

Objectives

  • Build 200 MW of solar power with 120 MWh of battery storage
  • Help integrate intermittent solar power into Egypt's national grid

Approach

  • A private developer builds and runs the plant with battery storage alongside, so solar output can be shifted into the grid when it is needed.
