ART TREES Guyana (Jurisdictional REDD+)

Guyana holds 18 million hectares of tropical forest, 87% of its land area, storing an estimated 21.8 billion tonnes of CO2e. In December 2022 it became the first jurisdiction anywhere to receive TREES credits from the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions.

Overview

Inside the project

A second issuance followed in February 2024 for 2021 results. Guyana's government frames the credits as recognition of its 'High Forest, Low Deforestation' status; independent verification was carried out by Aster Global Environmental Services.

By the government's own account, 15% of proceeds go directly to Indigenous communities for activities of their choosing, with the remaining 85% funding land titling, renewable energy, canal repair and climate adaptation.
