Abu Dhabi Blue Carbon / Jubail Mangrove Park Programme
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi runs a long-running, multi-partner Blue Carbon programme that the agency describes as among the oldest known mangrove restoration and afforestation initiatives anywhere in the world, with some stands nearly 100 years old.

Inside the project
Today the programme spans drone-seed planting at Mirfa Lagoon with ENGIE and Distant Imagery, satellite carbon-stock mapping with AGEDI, and the Etihad Mangrove Forest at Jubail Island, where corporate partners including Etihad Airways can sponsor plantings.
The agency's Blue Carbon Demonstration Project found more than 41 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent stored in Abu Dhabi's coastal soil and biomass, and it reports more than 15 million young mangroves planted along the Abu Dhabi coast over the past decade.
Objectives
- Expand mangrove planting and monitoring along the Abu Dhabi coast
- Quantify blue carbon stored in coastal mangrove soil and biomass
Approach
- Drone-based seed planting, satellite carbon-stock mapping and corporate-sponsored plantings are combined across several coastal sites under one national programme.
