Cameroon Mangrove Blue Carbon
Around Douala-Edéa National Park and the Wouri and Ntem estuaries, among Cameroon's most degraded Atlantic mangrove, several efforts run in parallel. The largest carbon-focused proposal, BluEdea (developer Apolownia), targets 3,000 hectares over 40 years under Verra VM0033, with figures still ex-ante. The CAMERR programme (Planète Urgence with CWCS, launched November 2022) aims to restore 1,000 hectares and reports 1.32 million trees planted since 2020.
Inside the project
This site hosts more than one project; the BluEdea carbon proposal and the CAMERR restoration programme are distinct.
BluEdea, developed by Apolownia, projects 3,000 hectares of restoration over 40 years and 2.5 million tonnes CO2e under Verra VM0033, but those figures are projected (ex-ante), not achieved.
CAMERR, led by Planète Urgence with local partner CWCS and backed by Sia Partners and Orange, reports 1,322,000 trees planted and 240 hectares reforested since 2020, against a 1,000-hectare target.
Objectives
- Restore and sustainably manage degraded Atlantic mangrove
- Enhance coastal and ecological resilience and biodiversity
- Support community socio-economic development
- Sequester and store carbon and contribute to the SDGs
Approach
- BluEdea implies standard VM0033 MRV with baseline and ex-post field measurement and verification, though no specifics are published.
- CAMERR runs a project-level monitoring plan tracking hectares, trees planted and seedling survival, rather than formal carbon MRV.
